Cock of the Rock Lodge Location

In the Manu reserve, the Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge is located on the eastern slopes of the Andes in pristine cloud forest. The lodge is named after the brilliantly coloured cock-of-the-rock, the national bird of Peru. Every morning and evening the birds display at a specific display ground called a lek, which is located right next to the lodge. The surrounding forest is inhabited by capuchin monkeys, many colourful birds, spectacled bears, and wooly monkeys. There are many opportunities to see exotic plants and animals.

The incredible 165km/102-mile drive from Cusco to the lodge crosses the most spectacular and varied range of Andean habitats in South America. The drive typically lasts 8 hours, including stops in Andean towns and many opportunities to walk and experience on foot the upper cloud forest habitat. Often groups will take extra time to savor the unforgettable scenery, excellent birding and abundant cloud forest flora.

Cock of the Rock Description

The area is mosquito free, which may bring a welcome surprise for those recently travelling in the lowlands. The lodge consists of 12 double-occupancy wooden bungalows, which all have private bathrooms. There is a separate complex with a large dining room. A local highland family staffs the lodge, and they also work as rangers, patrolling the private reserve.
