Delfin I & The Pacaya Samiria National Park
The Pacaya Samiria National Reserve is the largest protected flooded forests in the world, making it one of the primary intact swathes of rainforest in the Peruvian Amazon. During the rainy season in the Andes, water levels rise in the Amazon, flooding 85% of the reserve and making it only accessible by boat.
The Pacaya-Samiria Reserve is unique in Peru and is directly linked to the economic well-being of its resident population. At least 100,000 ribereños live along the banks of the flooded Amazon rainforest and rely on its aquatic and terrestrial resources for food an income.
Experience an ideal combination: natural wonders and native cultural history. Our pioneering approach to local communities means we interact with the villagers who live within the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve and aim to help develop and promote a balance between their needs and those of the wildlife with which they share habitat and ecosystems.
- Jenny, Melbourne, Australia
The Amazon Basin includes a diversity of traditional inhabitants as well as biodiversity in both flora and fauna. These people have lived in the rain forest for thousands of years and their life styles and cultures are well adapted to this environment.
Contrary to popular belief, their subsistence living methods do not significantly harm the environment. Their work day is mostly occupied by subsistence activities like fishing, small-scale agriculture, gathering and hunting. Their survival depends on their intimate relationship with the natural environment.
