Tahuayo Lodge Amazon Tour
The Tahuayo Lodge has operated highly acclaimed natural history and adventure tours since 1981. As the only licensed tour operator with access to Peru’s Tamshiyacu-Tahuayo Reserve, famed for its diversity of wildlife, the Tahuayo Lodge is an award winning lodge to experience the surrounding Amazon Rainforest. There are sufficient English speaking men and women guides so that every guest can have an itinerary customized to their needs and interests.
After our staff greet you at the small Iquitos airport in Peru, you will travel 150km up the mighty Amazon River, along the Tahuayo tributary, and on to the Tahuayo Lodge.
The Tahuayo Lodge is the only tourist lodge in the incredibly diverse Tamshiyacu Tahuayo Reserve, and once here, your tour can be shaped around your interests. If you have specific interests e.g. family tours, photography or bird watching, mention these on our contact form and we will assign a guide with this specialty.

Tahuayo Lodge Accommodation
– Michelle Gately, Medford, MA
From the boat, you first step onto the wooden platform at the river’s edge and are shown your room. You will see the dining hall surrounded by a green net, which will keep out unwanted visitors as you enjoy the delicious food. To your left there is a walkway leading to the Tahuayo Lodge Amazon laboratory and library where you can read about wildlife to discover in the Tamshiyacu Tahuayo Reserve. Your room consists of a comfortable four post bed draped with a mosquito net to keep you comfortable on your stay. After you have dropped off your luggage, you are free to explore the lodge at your leisure.

The Lodge Rooms
The Tahuayo lodge construction is rustic yet comfortable with 15 rooms in total. Dependent on your requirements, we will assign you either a honeymoon cabin with a single large bed, a cabin with two beds, or a family cabin with one large bed and several single beds. Each cabin is raised above the forest floor on stilts and connected to the rest of the lodge by a raised boardwalk. The raising above the floor means there is minimal effect on wildlife and keeps the lodge dry so you don’t experience flooding in the wet season. The other buildings consist of a large dining hall and areas to relax and socialize.
There is some electricity provided by solar panels and batteries. We also have lighting provided by solar panels, but it is best if you bring a torch just in case. A generator is provided for you to recharge camera batteries etc. The electrical outlets are for Peru 220v plugs and US 110v plugs.
– Jerroid Marks
Your food is prepared by Tahuayo culinary staff and the chefs are frequently complimented (special diets can be accommodated with prior notice). We have experience in sanitary food, water handling, and preparation. This means you can eat anything served at the Tahuayo Lodge, even salads and unpeeled fruit, items generally not recommended for tourists in South America.
Laundry and Bathrooms
We offer you a laundry service (unique among jungle lodges) and we have modern flush toilets. Half of our cabins have new private bathrooms, the other half have shared bathrooms.
Cabins with private bathrooms are assigned on the basis of earliest reservation.
Tahuayo Lodge Amazon Tour
When you arrive at the Tahuayo Lodge, you will sit down with your friendly private guide to discuss your interests. From this moment, your Amazon tour is shaped around you. If you have specific interests, please mention these on our contact form and we will assign a guide with this specialty.
Tahuayo Lodge & The Tamshiyacu Tahuayo
The Tahuayo lodge is the only tourist lodge in the Tamshiyacu Tahuayo Reserve and provides a comfortable base to experience the surrounding Amazon Rainforest. The reserve is known to contain one of the highest levels of animals and plants in the entire Amazon Rainforest.
You can customize activities to your interest or let our professional guides suggest a general experience. Activities include walks in remote terra firma forest, viewing or swimming with pink dolphins, finding feeding macaw parrots, kayaking Amazon tributaries, visiting native Amazon communities, finding poison dart frogs, jungle survival, observing abundant monkeys on our 1000 acre research grid, enjoying our canopy zipline system, and fishing for piranha. View detailed Tahuayo Lodge activities page.
Tahuayo Lodge Amazon Wildlife
We have compiled a bird list of the Tahuayo Reserve’s avian fauna.
On professionally guided forest walks & river tours, we will encounter many different Amazon Rainforest animals like rainforest dolphins, many monkeys, poison dart frogs, many different Amazon birds, butterflies, reptiles, and rarer Amazon wildlife if we’re lucky.
Tahuayo River Amazon Research Center
In addition to a comfortable stay at our lodge, you can stay one to three nights at our new Amazon Research Center located in remote pristine forest. The research center also has home comforts like private cabins and flushing toilets.
The ARC contains a research grid we can navigate into pristine Amazon Rainforest searching for the incredible diversity of primates the reserve was established to protect. Because researchers are monitoring populations, these animals are easier to spot here as they have habituated to the presence of people.
