Getting to the Umbrellabird Lodge

From Machala City, take the road towards Piñas, passing by Zaracay settlement. Continue beyond Zaracay until you find road signs of Selva Alegre resort and Jocotoco Foundation. It will take you approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes driving from Machala. A dirty road on the left enters into the Reserve; the Umbrellabird Lodge is 5 km from Selva Alegre.

If coming from Piñas, take the road to Zaracay and Machala. Some 15 minutes after Piñas you will find a shrine for Virgin Mary; take the road on your right, following Jocotoco Foundation’s signs, to get into the Scenic Route that will take you right into the Lodge after 7 km. Driving down to Selva Alegre and taking the Selva Alegre road is more advisable during the rainy season.

Two bus companies connect Quito with Piñas. In Piñas you will need to hire a truck to get to the Reserve.

Umbrellabird Lodge Trails

The Lodge is settled in the lower portion of Buenaventura Reserve at 500 m elevation. This reserve is home of some fantastic animals, including almost 300 bird species, many of them endemic to the region. Special climatatic conditions have resulted in a wide variety of habitats used by birds.

We also offer spectacular trails like:

Umbrellabird Trail
Duration: 1.5 hours. Distance: 2 km. Altitude: 500-600 m. Difficulty level: moderate.
This trail has cobbled ground and safety handrails, but is only marked up to the Long-wattled Umbrellabird lek (its courtship display arena).

Scenic Route
Duration: 4 hours. Distance: 7 km. Altitude: 400-950 m. Difficulty level: moderate.
An open and well-maintained cobbled trail that used to be part of the old Machala-Piñas road. It traverses the Reserve and provides easy observation of the diverse flora and fauna of the area, as well as the variation in altitudinal ecological zones. Else, birdwatching opportunities abound as birds sing and fly across the trail throughout the whole journey. This route is one of the road accesses to the Lodge, connecting the Virgin Mary shrine with the Umbrellabird Lodge. It is also ideal for trekking and mountain biking.

Parakeet Trail
Duration: 1.5 horas. Distance: 1 km. Altitude: 850 m. Difficulty level: moderate.
A well-maintained trail with cobbled ground and safety handrails. It offers a panoramic view of the Reserve and Cerro Buenaventura.

Tapaculo Trail
Duration: 1.5 hours. Distance: 2 km. Altitude: 950 m. Difficulty level: moderate-high.
Seldom visited by tourists.
