Getting to the Umbrellabird Lodge
From Machala City, take the road towards Piñas, passing by Zaracay settlement. Continue beyond Zaracay until you find road signs of Selva Alegre resort and Jocotoco Foundation. It will take you approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes driving from Machala. A dirty road on the left enters into the Reserve; the Umbrellabird Lodge is 5 km from Selva Alegre.
If coming from Piñas, take the road to Zaracay and Machala. Some 15 minutes after Piñas you will find a shrine for Virgin Mary; take the road on your right, following Jocotoco Foundation’s signs, to get into the Scenic Route that will take you right into the Lodge after 7 km. Driving down to Selva Alegre and taking the Selva Alegre road is more advisable during the rainy season.
Two bus companies connect Quito with Piñas. In Piñas you will need to hire a truck to get to the Reserve.
