Things to do in Manaus

Manaus is the largest city in the Amazon Rainforest and so there are more things to do in Manaus than other Amazon cities. From the inside, it’s a city practically indistinguishable from any other and it’s especially hard to realise that you’re in the middle of the rainforest. As with all the other towns and cities fortunate to be close to the largest wildlife container on Earth, the main thing to do in Manaus is to explore the surrounding Amazon Rainforest on an Amazon Jungle tour.

There are several top rated Amazon Rainforest cruises that explore the Manaus Amazon River and Rio Negro. On these tours, you will be shown incredible rainforest diversity. You can see the meeting of the waters, archaeological sites, take guided tours of the city, visit the Anavilhanas island archipelago; and of course, explore the rainforest on small boats or walking tours from the vessel, which are led by professional naturalist guides.

The city of Manaus itself is a bustling metropolis in the Amazon where you can enjoy historic sites like the rubber-boom-period Teatro Amazonas, which is still a functional theater. The Teatro Amazonas is probably the most popular attraction, as it is an icon of the rubber-boom past, a time in history that grew large Amazon cities from humble river villages. The meeting of the waters is another popular natural attraction near Manaus. Here, the Rio Negro and Amazon merge to create a fantastic spectacle as dark water crashes with light water. Some of my personal favorite attractions in Manaus are the Adolpho Ducke Botanical Garden and the market.

The botanical garden is in a reserve very close to the city where you can get a taste for the rainforest. This is a great place to find insects, butterflies, and other smaller Amazon life. You can also learn a little about the plants you are likely to spot on your Amazon Rainforest tour.

The market is where you can sample and enjoy exotic fruit from the Amazon and see how the locals live, see what they like to eat, and enjoy the local atmosphere. If you would like a guided tour of the city, you can arrange this with your booking for the Tucano Amazon Cruise to make sure you don’t miss any of the favorite attractions. This also means you learn about Manaus history in a little more depth.
