Hardhead

Hardeads (Aythya australis) are a medium sized diving-duck. They are a chocolatey brown colour with a pure white undertail and breast patch. Their range includes Australia and New Guinea, but they were also found in New Zealand although now regionally extinct. They are classed as least concern due mainly to their Australia-wide distribution, although they are more common along the east coast. Male ducks can be recognised by their white eyes, which are brown in female ducks.
