The Amazonian population is only now reaching the level attained before European colonisation. The major difference is the population is now urban. Like magnets, the towns and cities in Amazonia have drawn people from the surrounding wilderness and concentrated them mainly in the cities of Iquitos, Manaus, and Belem.
