Cock-of-the-Rock

In the Manu reserve, the Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge is located on the eastern slopes of the Andes in pristine cloud forest. The lodge is named after the brilliantly coloured cock-of-the-rock, which is the national bird of Peru. Every morning and evening the birds display at a specific display ground called a lek, which is located right next to the lodge. The surrounding forest is inhabited by capuchin monkeys, many colourful birds, spectacled bears, and wooly monkeys. There are many opportunities to see exotic plants and animals.

The area is mosquito free, which may bring a welcome surprise for those recently travelling in the lowlands. The lodge consists of 12 double-occupancy wooden bungalows, which all have private bathrooms. There is a separate complex with a large dining room. A local highland family staffs the lodge, and they also work as rangers, patrolling the private reserve.
