Tucano Expedition Cruise >

Tour Schedule

Sunset on the Tucano

Exploring some of the most untouched areas of the Amazon, we guide small groups of visitors down the Rio Negro and through areas of Amazon forest out of reach on other tours. We are the only vessel able to tour one of the largest Amazonian reserves, the Central Amazon Ecological Corridor.

Cabins and flower on Nature treks

We begin the tour in Manaus, northern Brazil, and over seven full days navigate upstream on the Rio Negro. We are not confined to the vessel, and during daylight hours, and also often at night, we explore the forest with naturalist guides for wildlife. We have small boats on board to explore the small streams and waterways of the forest. Of an evening, we have discussions about the wildlife observed during the day and sometimes head out in the small boats to see caiman. The Tucano takes us 200 miles from Manaus exploring the many tributaries enroute. This is where the forest is at its most untouched. The last day of the voyage consists of observing the meeting of the Amazon River and the Rio Negro. Because the rivers don’t readily mix you can see the dark Rio Negro running alongside the lighter Amazon River; the rivers remain unmixed for many miles. On the tour, we also visit the homes of deep forest settlers. Here we talk to them about life like deep in the forest and hear about the plants they utilise for medicines and food.

Full Itinerary

Dinner on the Tucano

We visit flooded rainforest where the water claims the forest on the seasonal basis. Here orchids and bromeliads cling to the branches. We also visit terra firme and varzea forests to see colourful birds, monkeys, and magnificent rainforest trees.

Tucano Yacht and Howler Monkey

The daily schedule varies from day to day, but we follow a rough outline of activities. Every morning we get up with the sun to search for wildlife in small boats or trek through the forest in search of wakening howler monkeys. We then return mid-morning for a full Brazilian breakfast, relax, and go on another excursion into the forest. At around noon the vessel gets underway and we travel until the late afternoon, which is when most animals come out again to feed. About two hours before sunset we embark on an excursion to some other place of interest. In the evenings we have an informal talk about what we may expect to see the following day. Some evenings, from the comfort of the small boats, we spot wildlife with powerful searchlights.

Jaguar

We accept a maximum of only 18 passengers. This is in order to stay focussed on Nature. On excursions, we divide into still smaller groups guided by our onboard naturalists.

We see and do a great deal in the forest, but there is also plenty of time to relax and have fun during the trip. We swim in some of the cleanest water in the world; the Rio Negro is almost identical to rainwater.

Our trips take place in one of the least inhabited parts of the Amazon, in the State of Amazonas, Brazil. This is one of the most pristine areas in all of the Amazon Rainforest.
