Harpy Eagle
Harpia harpyja
|
The harpy eagle is among the world’s largest birds of prey, and it is the most powerful bird of the Amazon. The talons of this magnificent eagle reach 13 cm and they are often spotted flying with prey, such as a sloth or monkey. Harpy eagles have a white underside and black chest, and a crown of grey feathers atop their majestic heads. They nest in the Amazon’s tallest trees and produce two eggs every other year, but only one of these is raised. The other is ignored and fails to hatch.
