Whip spiders, or tailless whip scorpions, compose 3 families of arachnids in the order Amblypygi. They are completely harmless and do not sting or bite. However, they should not be confused with the whip scorpions, which can squirt acetic or formic acid and give a painful pinch. Whip spiders are cave dwelling animals with segmented chelicerae and a long pair of front legs for sensing the environment. If disturbed, they quickly scuttle sideways away from danger.
