Marmoset Monkey Facts

Marmoset monkeys live in the forests of South America. About the size of a squirrel, marmoset monkeys are constantly on the move searching for food. This is composed of insects, small vertebrates, bird eggs, fruit, and plant exudates.

They live in family groups and usually only one male breeds with the rest helping to carry young.  These extra helpers mean the female can spend all her energy producing milk. Baby marmosets are carried until independent at around 2 months old.

Marmosets and Tamarins

Belonging to the same family as tamarins, both tamarins and marmoset males gnaw branches and soak them with urine to communicate. Other similarities are that both marmosets and tamarins lack opposable thumbs and a prehensile tail.

The Pygmy Marmoset

The pygmy marmoset (Cebuella pygmaea) is found in the Amazon region and, with a head and body length of 152 mm, is the smallest New World primate. More pygmy marmoset info is that they prefer low secondary growth with thick cover that allows for visibility. They appear to cope better than other marmosets regarding habitat degradation.
